For many families across the United States, the Fourth of July is a day filled with barbecues, music, celebrations, and fireworks lighting up the night sky. But while humans may enjoy the spectacle, for countless pets this holiday can become one of the most stressful and dangerous nights of the year. Every year, animal shelters report a significant increase in lost pets during the days surrounding Independence Day.

Every summer, countless pets are placed at risk in a matter of minutes simply by being left inside parked cars. Even on days that may not feel extremely hot to humans, the temperature inside a vehicle can rise rapidly and become deadly for dogs and cats.

Summer walks can be one of the best parts of the day for dogs and their humans — fresh air, exercise, sunshine, and bonding time. But during hot weather, something many pet parents overlook can become extremely dangerous: the pavement.

If I could sit down with each of you before summer fully settles in, this is what I would share. Florida summers are beautiful, long days, afternoon storms, beach trips, family time. But for our pets, this season can also be one of the most physically stressful times of the year. Every summer, we see preventable emergencies that start with good intentions, “just a short walk,” “just a little time outside.”
