Walking your dog on hot pavement can be dangerous, as it can burn their pads. Here are some key precautions you should take to protect them:
Ā
š¾ 1. Test the pavement with your hand or foot
Ā
Before you go outside, place the back of your hand or the sole of your bare foot on the pavement for 5ā7 seconds.
Ā
If it's too hot for you, it's too hot for your dog.
Ā
āļø 2. Avoid the hottest times of the day
Ā
Take your dog for walks in the early morning or late evening, when the pavement is cooler.
Ā
š 3. Wear dog boots
Ā
There are special boots that protect their paws from the heat (and also from the cold in winter).
Ā
Make sure they are comfortable and won't cause irritation.
Ā
š³ 4. Walk on grass or in the shade
Ā
Whenever possible, choose shaded or grassy routes.
Ā
Avoid asphalt and concrete exposed to direct sunlight.
Ā
š§ 5. Keep your dog hydrated
Ā
Carry fresh water with you.
Ā
Take frequent breaks for your dog to rest and hydrate.
Ā
šØ 6. Watch for signs of burns or overheating
Ā
Check their paws when you get home. Signs of burns:
Ā
Reddened, blistered, or cracked pads.
Ā
Limping or reluctance to walk.
Ā
Excessive licking of paws.
Ā
And symptoms of heat exhaustion:
Ā
Excessive panting, weakness, very red gums, vomiting.
