Walking your dog on hot pavement can be dangerous, as it can burn their pads. Here are some key precautions you should take to protect them:

🐾 1. Test the pavement with your hand or foot

Before you go outside, place the back of your hand or the sole of your bare foot on the pavement for 5–7 seconds.

If it's too hot for you, it's too hot for your dog.

☀️ 2. Avoid the hottest times of the day

Take your dog for walks in the early morning or late evening, when the pavement is cooler.

👟 3. Wear dog boots

There are special boots that protect their paws from the heat (and also from the cold in winter).

Make sure they are comfortable and won't cause irritation.

🌳 4. Walk on grass or in the shade

Whenever possible, choose shaded or grassy routes.

Avoid asphalt and concrete exposed to direct sunlight.

💧 5. Keep your dog hydrated

Carry fresh water with you.

Take frequent breaks for your dog to rest and hydrate.

🚨 6. Watch for signs of burns or overheating

Check their paws when you get home. Signs of burns:

Reddened, blistered, or cracked pads.

Limping or reluctance to walk.

Excessive licking of paws.

And symptoms of heat exhaustion:

Excessive panting, weakness, very red gums, vomiting.
