The Incorrect use of the crates

Dogs can develop negative associations with crates from a very early stage in life. Many puppies are separated from their mothers too soon and placed in confined spaces with their siblings, often competing for attention and resources, sometimes without proper supervision.

Later, they are transported in crates to pet stores or other destinations, which can further reinforce feelings of stress or discomfort associated with confinement.

Despite this, crates are commonly recommended by trainers and pet shoop as a tool to prevent damage in the home. However, over-reliance on confinement can contribute to emotional distress in some dogs.

This distress may show up in different ways, such as excessive barking, whining, having accidents in front of their owners, destructive behaviors like chewing furniture. And separation anxiety. These are often signs that the dog is not feeling comfortable or secure.

Based on my studies in psychology and canine behavior, along with my hands-on experience working with dogs, I can confidently affirm these patterns and the impact they have on a dog’s emotional well-being.

With smart training, we focus on helping the dog understand and naturally choose the right behaviors—such as going to the bathroom outdoors—while clearly communicating the difference between what is right and wrong, without relying on constant confinement.
