Tips to Protect Pets in Hot Weather

Best Friends recommends taking some simple precautions to keep dogs and cats healthy and comfortable as temperatures rise. Here are some tips:

Keep pets inside during the day. This may seem obvious, but it's hotter outside when the sun is out. Short walks and potty breaks are fine but try to keep your pets in the shade.

If pets spend time outdoors during the day, make sure they always have access to shade. Dogs on leashes are especially vulnerable because they could become tangled in their leashes, out of reach of shade or a water bowl. Grass and vegetation also help keep the yard cooler.

Make sure pets always have fresh water. During the summer heat, empty the water bowl and refill it with fresh water. Most dogs won't drink hot water, no matter how thirsty they are.
Exercise dogs during the cooler hours of the morning or evening, not in the intense heat of the afternoon. Older dogs, those who are overweight, or those with thick fur or a sunken nose (such as boxers, pugs, and Pekingese) are even more at risk of overheating. Bring water for you and your pet, or a collapsible bowl if there is a water fountain on your route.
Be aware of the temperature of the sidewalk, asphalt, sand, or even hard-packed soil, as heat can burn your pet's paw pads if they get too hot.
Consult a veterinarian to see if your pet needs pet-approved sunscreen on exposed areas. Dogs with bald spots or minimal fur may need sunscreen, as do Nordic dog breeds, which are prone to sun-related autoimmune diseases.
Never leave your pet in a parked car when the outside temperature is above 70 degrees. Not even with the windows half open, or in the shade, or to run a quick errand. Dogs and cats can't sweat like humans, so they pant to lower their body temperature. If they're inside a car circulating very hot air, panting doesn't help them find relief, and heatstroke can occur quickly.
