Halloween With Your Pet: Fun Without the Frights

Halloween can be an amazing night for the whole family, but for our dogs and cats, costumes, candy, loud noises, and doors constantly opening can turn the celebration into a truly scary experience.

The key is to celebrate with their safety and comfort in mind, too.

👻 TRICK OR TREAT?

The treats are for you, not for them.

Keep chocolate, candy, gum, and especially products containing xylitol away from your pets. Candy wrappers and bags should also be kept safely out of reach.

🧙‍♀️ COSTUMES? YES… BUT KEEP THEM COMFORTABLE

Does your pet love dressing up? Perfect!

Choose a lightweight costume that allows them to walk, breathe, see, and hear normally. Avoid small pieces they could pull off and swallow.

If your pet tries to remove the costume, freezes, pants excessively, or shows signs of discomfort, a Halloween-themed bandana may be more than enough.

Halloween should be fun for both of you.

🚪 WATCH THE DOOR

Between trick-or-treaters, neighbors, and visitors, your front door may open dozens of times throughout the evening.

Keep your pet in a secure area and make sure they are wearing an up-to-date ID tag. Halloween is also a great time to confirm that your pet’s microchip information is current.

🕯️ DECORATE WITHOUT THE DANGER

Candles, electrical cords, string lights, artificial spiderwebs, and small decorations can pose a danger to curious pets.

Keep decorations safely out of reach and consider using LED candles instead of real flames.

🐈‍⬛ CREATE A “SAFE ZONE”

Not every pet enjoys Halloween.

If your pet becomes nervous around doorbells, costumes, loud noises, or unfamiliar people, prepare a quiet room with their bed, fresh water, favorite toys, and some soft music.

Give them a comfortable place where they can relax away from all the excitement.
