PUMPKIN SEASON
Is Pumpkin Really Good for Your Dog?
Pumpkin spice, decorations, specialty coffees, and pumpkins everywhere. Pumpkin season has officially arrived. But while we enjoy all the traditions of fall, an inevitable question comes up: Can our dogs enjoy pumpkin too?
The answer is yes—with a few important considerations.
Plain, cooked pumpkin with no added ingredients can occasionally be part of many dogs’ diets. It contains fiber and nutrients and is commonly used as a dietary supplement.
However, just because something contains “pumpkin” doesn’t automatically mean it’s appropriate for your pet.
🎃 NATURAL IS THE KEY WORD
If you want to share pumpkin with your dog, look for 100% pure pumpkin puree, with no added sugar, spices, or other ingredients.
This is especially important when buying canned products: pumpkin puree and pumpkin pie filling are not the same thing.
Pumpkin pie filling may contain added sugar, fats, and spices that we simply don’t need to add to our pets’ diets.
☕ WHAT ABOUT THE FAMOUS PUMPKIN SPICE LATTE?
Keep that one exclusively for the humans.
Dogs don’t need beverages containing caffeine, large amounts of sugar, cream, syrups, or spice blends.
In fact, some ingredients commonly found in our favorite fall products can be dangerous for them.
⚠️ BE CAREFUL WITH NUTMEG
Nutmeg contains myristicin, a compound that can be toxic to dogs when consumed in sufficient amounts.
So the rule is simple:
Pumpkin? Yes.Pumpkin spice? No.
🐾 A SPECIAL FALL TREAT
You can use a small amount of plain pumpkin puree as a topping on your dog’s regular food or occasionally incorporate it into homemade treats specifically prepared for dogs.
The appropriate amount will depend on your pet’s size, regular diet, and individual needs.
If your dog has a medical condition, follows a special diet, or experiences digestive problems, consult your veterinarian before adding pumpkin to their diet.
🧡 PAWS IN TOWN TIP
🎃 Always read the label.
Look for:
✓ 100% pumpkin✓ No added sugar✓ No sweeteners✓ No spice blends
And remember: even pet-safe foods should be offered in moderation.
🍂 FALL REMINDER
Fall is filled with delicious flavors for us, but some traditional seasonal and holiday foods do not belong in our pets’ bowls.
Chocolate, products containing xylitol, alcohol, grapes, and raisins, among others, should always be kept safely out of reach.
We can include our pets in our fall traditions without sharing everything we eat.
After all, their favorite flavor of the season will probably always be the same:
Being right by our side. 🐾🍂
